As I dedicated a post to mentioned the other day, last Thursday was mine and Iestyn's five year Anniversary, and so to celebrate we decided to go out for dinner (plus it was weigh in night, and so I could allow myself to eat anything I fancied!). We decided to go to The White Eagle in Rhoscolyn, somewhere I haven't been since I was very young, but my sister went at the weekend and said she highly recommended it. The White Eagle is a pub with good food, wine and beer menus. As someone who doesn't drink beer, I can't attest to the quality of the Beer Menu (although I am sure it is of high quality), but I fully approve the Food and Wine menu!
To start off I ordered a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. It was crisp and fruity, and best of all, came in a huge glass. To be honest a few sips on an empty stomach, and I was getting pretty merry! We quickly ordered some water for the table so that I wouldn't have to be carried home before even ordering the food!

A blurry picture of my good looking date...
For a starter I chose the 'Anglesey goats cheese mousse with pickled beetroot, smoked sea salt & pea shoots'. Wow was this full of flavour- almost over powering, but I suppose that is to be expected with both goats cheese and beetroot. I don't think I've had pickled beetroot before, and the flavour was intense. My only criticism of this was that the ratio of croutes to the goats cheese and beetroot wasn't high enough. I felt that bold flavours need a bland carrier of flavours, plus they have both have soft consistencies, so the added crunch is really needed. I'm not sure if maybe my palette wasn't sophisticated enough to appreciate the complex flavour combination, or if I am justified in my comments of it being slightly overpowering. So in conclusion smaller goats cheese portion and bigger croutes portion. The presentation was superb as you can see.
I took forever trying to decide what to order for the main meal. I always seem to take ordering food at a restaurant so seriously, I guess I just don't want to end up disappointed with my order! I also had to mentally wrestle myself over whether I should try and be healthy and order something with plenty of vegetables and grains, with preferably a tomato based sauce (typical diet thoughts), or to allow myself to have whatever I fancied, as this was a nice fancy meal out. I decided on the latter! After much deliberation, I decided on the Fish Burger, which was a beer battered fillet of haddock, pea puree and tartare sauce. I have to say that I didn't expect it to be so massive. I thought it was going to be fancy restaurant food, where I was going to have five chips stacked, and a burger which equaled a bite, but this was clearly not the case here!
I am disappointed to report that I didn't manage to finish this from a long way off, although this is probably a good thing, as I would of burst otherwise! I eat half the chips, one piece of bread, most of the fish and all off the pea puree (and I really should of stopped sooner, but it tasted so good!)
Ahh the pea puree... I was quite scared when I saw that blob of fluorescent green on my bap- I am not a huge fan of peas! But I have to say it was delicious! I was furiously scraping it off as I wanted to enjoy some with every mouthful, as it truly complemented everything on the plate! I am guessing there must of been butter involved to make it taste so good!
Enough about peas, on to what was the bulk of the meal, the fish and chips! The chips were so good, crisp and crunchy on the outside, but very fluffy on the inside. The batter on the fish was delicious, very buttery tasting, and the fish melted on your mouth. My only criticism s that I would of preferred the option of a wholemeal bap, but that is a teeny tiny thing!
After finishing my meal, I declared myself full, never to eat again. That is until I remembered that dessert is a separate stomach! Ha! I had perused the Dessert menu before even ordering the starter- does any one else do this? Sometimes I think I would be better off ordering dessert first, and then re-assessing what I felt like for the Main meal! What immediately caught my attention was some sort of chocolate concoction that I can't quite remember now. However after all of that food I decided that although I wanted something sweet, I wanted something lighter, which is why I was drawn to a separate menu they had for ice cream from a local ice cream company. Unfortunately I didn't note the name of the company, so I can't pay my respects to them for their amazing ice cream making abilities! It was an easy choice for me to decide what my first flavour selection was going to be- Tiramisu! It is one of my favourite desserts of all time! This ice cream really did taste like you were taking a bite of tiramisu! The second flavour I selected was, I believe (I'm writing this a week later, and my memory isn't good at the best of times!) creme caramel, which was very creamy- as all good ice creams should be!
It was all served in a brandy basket, which I obviously took a few nibbles of just to make sure it was good- it was. I also really liked the decorative sauce round the side, which I'm guessing were coffee and possible baileys flavour?! It was good regardless. Isn't the presentation impressive?!
All in all we had a really good time! I really liked the decor of the place- lots of wood, and mismatched furniture, with huge floor to celing windows, which I assume posses impressive views if it wasn't dark when we arrived! I already want to go back, and am looking forward to the summer when I can hopefully sit outside on the balcony, drinking yet another large glass of wine, and watch the sun go down over the sea. Bliss.
(Sorry White Eagle it looks like you'll have to put up with the crazy lady taking pictures of the food again (hopefully) soon!)
